Speaker 1: You're listening to a Community Story from Be My Eyes. Sashia: Hi, my name is Sashia Dumont. I am a filmmaker, actor, and writer from New York. I've been a volunteer with Be My Eyes since June of 2018. I had read about the service in an article and I downloaded the app. I joined the community and I've taken several calls since then. I've been able to help callers do anything from locate misplaced credit cards to color matching socks, their laundry, helping with mail. Sashia: Most recently, during the pandemic, I took a call from a gentleman who had lost his sight pretty late in life, and he was needing some help navigating through his emails for his radio show. After the call, we actually continued to talk and we got to know each other and sort of bonded over the fact that we both had podcasts. We exchanged information. He was really helpful in informing me about the types of hurdles that he kind of had to jump over when it came to even doing something as simple as searching through emails because there were such limitations in software. So it was really, really interesting to learn just how difficult something that we take for granted is for somebody who is visually impaired. Sashia: I tell everybody about the app and I tell them to join. I think the more people we can get to help out, the easier it is for callers to be able to just get through simple tasks that we probably don't really think of very often. I just look forward to continuing to volunteer on Be My Eyes. And I can't wait to see how the community develops. Speaker 1: Thank you for listening to this Community Story from Be My Eyes.
